"When I'm Reborn"

In "When I'm Reborn", I explore the imagery of poetry in song, in particular the lyrics of Hozier, which have brought me comfort. My goal with this piece is to tell a story through symbolism and capture how I feel when I listen to this music. I draw most of my imagery from his song "Shrike", which is about love at the wrong time and hoping to meet again in the next life; he compares the relationship to a shrike which is a carnivorous songbird, and a thorn, which the bird uses to impale its prey. My Painting depicts a woman in a misty field; taking off her face she reveals a pomegranate, its blood-red seeds spilling out and attracting the birds. Her blind Eyes produce a golden tear as she casts the mirror aside with which she can't see her beauty.

Sketchbook Planning

Text Translation: For my mural, I was inspired by a song by Hozier called "Shrike", where he compares a lost love to a shrike which is a carnivorous songbird that catches small animals, birds, and lizards and impales them on thorns. There are a lot of lyrics playing with the ideas of life, death, reincarnation, and wisdom in this song and I wanted to depict that through symbolism. Life, death, and eternal life are captured in the pomegranate (relating to the myth of Persephone and Hades) which is part of everyone; loss and insight are shown through the raven.
